Who uses Rookling

Rookling is for kids in grades 5 to 7, but a parent or guardian creates and owns the account. Kids practice under that account. We do not ask children for personal information, and we do not knowingly collect it from them. If you believe a child created an account on their own, email us at [email protected] and we will delete it.

What we collect

• Account details: the parent's name and email address, from sign-up or Google sign-in.
• Practice history: the questions answered, the answers chosen, hints and word help used, and progress such as levels, reviews, and streaks. If a question is flagged for review, we store only which question it was and the reason picked.
• Anything typed into the app: notes when questioning an answer, and writing practice. We suggest kids don't type personal details there.
• Billing: your plan and subscription status. Card details go straight to our payment processor. We never see or store them.
• Basic usage data: anonymous page view counts and standard server logs, used to keep the site working. Analytics do not use cookies or build profiles.

How we use it

We use this information to run the tutor (choosing questions, coaching mistakes, and scheduling reviews), to show progress to parents, to process payments, to improve our questions, and to keep the service secure. We do not sell personal information, and we do not show ads.

The AI tutor

On Rookling Plus, questions are written and checked by an AI model from OpenAI. To write and coach a question, we send OpenAI the question itself, which answer was chosen, and anything typed when questioning an answer. We never send your name, email address, or account ID. OpenAI does not use data sent through its API to train its models by default, and keeps it only for a limited time to prevent abuse. The free plan does not use the AI at all.

For writing feedback on Plus, we send the prompt, the plan, the finished piece, and your child's own look back at it. Planning drills send the plan, and skill lessons send each short writing try. First, we remove anything that looks like an email address, phone number, street address, or web link. The AI only gives feedback. It never writes for your child. Every piece, plan, feedback, revision, and drill answer is saved to your account. You can download all of it or delete any piece from the writing page, and deleting the account deletes them all.

Who we share it with

We share information only with the companies that help us run Rookling, and only what each one needs:

• Clerk, for sign-in and subscriptions
• Stripe, for payments (through Clerk)
• Vercel, for hosting and anonymous analytics
• Neon, for our database
• OpenAI, for the AI tutor on Rookling Plus

We may also share information if the law requires it.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your information while your account is open. You can delete your account and all practice history at any time from the Account page. Deletion is immediate, and backup copies are removed within 30 days. You can also email us to see, correct, or delete your information.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit, answer keys and personal data stay on our servers, and access is limited to the people who run Rookling. No system is perfectly secure, so we also keep what we collect to a minimum.
